Garret woke up, unsure of what time of day it was, and whether or not the sun had risen yet. For all he knew, it could've still been the dead of night. Being underground, there was no way for him to tell. But it didn't really matter, he was awake now, and he didn't feel tired enough to drift back off to slumber anytime soon. He was up, and that was that.
He pushed himself up, now sitting up instead of laying down. He reached for the leather jacket behind him-about the only time he ever took it off was at night, where it served as a pillow for him whenever he had to sleep on some hard surface. He set on his lap, and pulled his backpack, laying besides him, closer to him and unzipped it. He pulled the cleanest t-shirt of the few he had out, and made a mental note to find look for a laundromat if he went into town. He pulled the shirt on, then his jacket on over it, and stood up.
Rett stood still, taking a moment to take in his surroundings. He couldn't see much better then an ordinary human in the dark, but all his other sense were enhanced, even in his unmorphed state, as he was now. He smelled no strange scents, at least none that hadn't been there the previous night. The place was virtually silent, only the occasional snores or shifting of others in far off parts of the underground entering his ears. He reached for his backpack, but froze as he lifted it. He heard something-footsteps.

"Remind me again why we're here," Hunter muttered quietly, reaching out to take his girlfriend's slim, pale hand just in time to steer her away from the deep rut she'd been heading for. "You're gonna break a leg down here."
The old tunnel floor were littered with holes and cracks, along with all sorts of garbage and filth but Hunter knew Silence couldn't see them very well, not in the pitch blackness that lapped at them like the depths of some phantom sea.

Silence smiled in the darkness, letting Hunter lead her now as they walked. She sighed as if exasperated, breathing in the heady scent of dampness and dirt that seemed to cling to everything around them. Normally she would have playfully pulled away when Hunter tried to give her a hand without asking but it was too dark for her. More than that, it was also quite cold.
"We're here," She breathed, moving closer to Hunter in search of warmth, "because you don't get out enough. Just because we're Freaks among freaks, doesn't give you a good enough excuse to turn yourself into a hermit. Besides, I think it's a neat new place to explore, don't you?"

Hunter chuckled low in his throat, the sound echoing hollowly off the tunnel walls, mingling with the already too-loud-for-comfort echoings of their footsteps.
"It's alright," He murmured, taking the hint and wrapping an arm around Silence's shoulders to lend her his warmth, "I can see a little better here but I prefer "seeing" to actual sight. This is just more shadows and sharp outlines."
He considered coming up with some smart remark to the hermit thing but decided instead to simply ignore it. No sense in justifying a remark by contributing to it, and he knew, at least in part, that there was some truth it.

Rett could hear the footsteps much more clearly-they were drawing closer now, a pair of people. He flared his nostrils, taking in the scents in the tunnels once more. They were other experiments, avians, he was pretty sure. It was the strongest scent besides his own from where he was. He slung the strap of his backpack over his shoulder and looked down the tunnel, trying to see if he could see them.
He make them out, just barely, a pair of inky silhouettes not that far away from him. He could hear one of them murmuring, but he didn't bother to try and make out the words. He stood his ground, for the moment, trying to make as little noise and movement as possible, waiting to determine whether or not they were a threat.

Silence slowed uncertainly to a stop, her mind prickling with the familiar chill of foreboding. Clutching at Hunter's arm as she struggled to peer through the darkness, she leaned closer to him slowly, raising an arm to point vaguely in the direction from which she sensed the unfamiliar presence.
"Someone's there." She knew it with an unshakable certainty, though she yet couldn't tell if the presence she felt was one she should fear or one she should welcome. She didn't want to extend her awareness that far yet, not wanting to cause unnecessary pain in this unknown being.

Hunter stopped, staring intently in the direction that Silence pointed. Indeed there did appear to be someone there, a sharp glow of a form against the darkness of the tunnel and Hunter’s sight. The amount of light in that form startled him, telltale sign of a fellow mutant. He moved slightly, placing himself between Silence and the stranger, though he knew his girlfriend was perfectly capable of defending herself.
“Hello?”

Rett took a tentative step forward, at the same time one of the strangers stepped in front of the other, probably to defend the other if the need arose. "Hey," He called out to them, after one-a male, he was fairly sure. "Who's out there?" He called, not really knowing what to expect in response. "We are,", maybe, or if he was lucky, their names. Most other experiments were unlikely to give it straight away. Not that he blamed them for it.

Phoenix was exploring underground. It was dark, damp, and highly uncomfortable. She ruffled her wings, pulling them tight to her back, and pulled her blanket tighter around her. Although she didn't have enhanced hearing or senses, she could hear some noises. The scurring of paws on stone, the slight snores coming slightly from the right. This catacomb of an underground tunnel was getting irritating. She shivered, stopping to reassess her location. Perhaps it would be better to find people to be around before falling asleep? Probably. She heard voices. Yeah, those were definitly voices. She took off running toward the sounds, in hope of finding more people. Or better. Hybrids.

Rett turned his head as another sound filled his ears. There was the shuffle of feathers, followed by a pair of running feet. At first, he thought it might be the pair of avians he'd just called out to, but quickly realized the footsteps were coming from the wrong direction. "Hello?" He called out, to both the pair coming from one side and the person coming from the other.

Phoenix stopped. There was that sound again, of a voice. She could see a light coming from ahead, and she ran with a burst of speed, breaking through the darkness and turning a corner. She was in a large hollowed out room, with a few other people in it, by the sounds of it. "Hi," she said. "Who's there?" She was panting. She would have introduced herself, but she was out of breath completely.

The voice, and the scent that went with it, seemed vaguely familiar to the canine hybrid. He looked to see Phoenix, a girl he'd met not too long ago in the forest, standing at the entrance to the section of the tunnel he stood in. "Garrett Stepford," He said, "We've met, once before."

"Oh yeah," she smiled. "Hi." She turned toward the source of another noise. It was soft, barely a fidget, but still audible. "But who's that? I don't know you..."

"I don't know," Garrett said with a shrug, looking down the tunnel where the first voices had come from. "They haven't answered me."
